Great American River Cleanup

For the third year in a row, SAMBAistas and their friends turned out to pick up trash for the annual Great American River Cleanup.  The latest cleanup event occurred Sept. 17, 2005.  Once again, we prove to the world that mountain bikers care about the environment and turn that care into action.

We cleaned up around the intersection of Del Paso and Northgate boulevards.  This area is the dirtiest mile on the Lower American River, primarily because it hosts a lot of transient activity.  This area also happens to be the area where we want to ride.  Sacramento County Supervisor Roger Dickinson showed up at the beginning of the cleanup, and saw us wearing our SAMBA shirts, ready to dig in.  Some of our prizes this year were two automotive batteries, several shopping carts (one removed from a deep ditch due to Herculean efforts by John Meyers), and, of course, lots of bicycle parts!

2005 cleanup participants (only a few of them!) L-R: John Power, John Meyers, Bob Horowitz, Bill Perry, Nancy Heard, Glenn Cameron, Kristin Yee.  Seated: Chris Marney.

Below, Bob, Bill and Kristin get a better look at the 2005 pile.

From the 2003 cleanup: L-R:  Krishna Chatorvedula and friend, Sue Fry, Tom Meager and the ranger.

Special thanks to all the folks who showed up to over the years, but are not in the pictures.  We'll get you next time!
